Koofr through time – a short history
The initial idea for a product that was to become Koofr as you know it, was born in 2012. A small tech-enthusiastic group of friends had a vision and poured their efforts into their idea because they saw its potential.
A year later, in 2013, Koofr was launched and quickly gained recognition, winning the Slovenian Startup of the Year Award. Initially, Koofr was available as a white-label solution which led to establishing international partnerships with major European telecommunication companies. The team paid special attention to supporting object storage, which allows for the construction of large storage systems, similar to those used by the world's largest companies. Koofr acquired its first customers in B2B market - ISPs and telecoms worldwide, who offer its users cloud storage services with Koofr's assistance (SaaS). Additionally, the company partnered with leading global hardware manufacturers to integrate hardware and software solutions into new, comprehensive products.
During the early years of the company, Koofr expanded its services due to new and increasing business opportunities, and these changes were also reflected in its business model. The year 2014 represented a significant turning point for the company. We noticed there was no truly private cloud storages on the market and decided to offer one. Since then our primary commitment is to privacy. The launch of a completely new product with a fresh visual design marked a major change that transformed Koofr into the early version of the advanced product it is today.
Since approximately 2015, Koofr cloud storage exists in a form known to you today. We adapted to our clients and gained new business experience, turning toward end customers. We have enhanced our services, refined our product design, and with time added numerous new functionalities, which we continue to develop and upgrade.
Over the years, Koofr has grown and evolved, gaining new collaborators and taking on new projects. While the world suffered from COVID-19 pandemic, we had a very successful year 2020. We started our collaboration with Facebook and became one of then three (currently five) partners that enable Facebook users to export photos and videos from their Facebook profiles to cloud storage.
The most recent of our newly-launched features is Koofr Vault, a powerful, open source, client-side, zero-knowledge encryption app. This way we can offer an even more private experience to our users. Through all these changes, our team also steadily expanded and evolved over the years, focusing on our mission and vision.
Koofr – why and how do we do it
We decided to offer the best possible product while collecting the least amount of data possible from our users, putting privacy to the very top of our values. Unlike other cloud storage services, we don’t use tracking, cookies, or ads, and we don’t train AI on customer data or sell personal information to third parties.
Since the beginning, we have set our prices to reflect the real costs associated with providing our services. Our revenue comes solely from our paying users, without any additional funding from venture capitalists. This allows us to stay independent and user-focused in our decision-making. Privacy is a core value for our team, our product and our company. Our self-reliance means that we can honestly commit to our values, without having to make compromises. The company is fully owned by its employees, who prioritize long-term stability over short-term profits. That means that we are here to stay.

We have exceptional customer service and hundreds of thousands of users with great user experience. We offer a wide range of affordable plans for individuals, starting from 10 GB to 20 TB, with an additional 10 GB of free space included in every package, plus a loyalty discount. We work with both end users and big companies in the B2B market, and we have many future business plans.
